والاسبيدس (ASPIDES) هو: الدرع الواقي في اللغة الأغريقية القديمة. فقد تدرعت أوروبا بأساطيلها الحربية، وجمحت بها نحو البحر الأحمر لكي توفر الحماية للسفن الاسرائيلية أو السفن التجارية المتوجهة إلى الموانئ الاسرائيلية. .
جاءت هذه الفزعة الأوروبية بعد ان فشلت الولايات المتحدة في تحقيق أهداف عملياتها البحرية تحت مسمى (حارس الازدهار) في مواجهة الصواريخ الحوثية. التي كانت مشروطة برفع الظلم عن غزة وتحريرها من قبضة النار والحصار. فأطلق الاتحاد الأوروبي رسميا مهمته الجديدة بذريعة حماية الملاحة الدولية في البحر الأحمر وردع الهجمات الحوثية هناك، رغم علم الاتحاد ان الملاحة الدولية بخير باستثناء السفن الاسرائيلية، ومن ثم اضيفت اليها السفن الأمريكية والبريطانية. ويعلم الأتحاد أيضاً ان الحل الأمثل والأضمن يستدعي وقف إطلاق النار على غزة ورفع الحصار عنها. لكنهم اختاروا المسار الأعقد والأصعب ليجربوا حظوظهم في مواجهة الصواريخ الحوثية. .
الاختلاف المعلن حتى الآن بين عملية (حارس الازدهار) وعملية (اسبيدس) هو أن التحالف البحري الجديد غير معني بشن الغارات على المواقع اليمنية في اليابسة، بمعنى أن أساطيلهم لن تقصف الأهداف البرية، وتقتصر واجباتهم على مرافقة السفن التجارية أثناء مرورها بخليج عدن وباب المندب. وبالتالي فان العملية الجديدة عملية دفاعية وليست هجومية. .
نذكر أيضاً ان الاتحاد الأوروبي خصص ميزانية شهرية تقدر بنحو 8 ملايين يورو يمولها صندوق السلام الأوروبي. وسوف تعتمد عملية (اسبيدس) في المرحلة الراهنة على المدمرة الإيطالية (كايو دويليو) المتواجدة في المنطقة، وبعض السفن الفرنسية والألمانية، والتي يظنون انها ستكون قادرة على صد الهجمات الحوثية الموجهة ضد السفن الاسرائيلية. .
