أضحت المراصد والتلسكوبات هي النافذة الحقيقية التي نطل من خلالها على الماضي الكوني السحيق. ننظر إلى النجوم كل يوم من دون ان ندرك اننا ننظر إلى القرون التي مرت على خلق السماوات والأرض. .
لسنا هنا بصدد تصفح كتاب: التاريخ الموجز للزمن (A Briefer History of Time) من تأليف ستيفن هوكينج، و ليوناردو ملودينوف عن مسألة الكون وقضية نشأته منذ الوهلة الأولى، بقدر ما نريد لفت الانتباه إلى أمرٍ في غاية الأهمية وفي غاية البساطة يتعلق بهيئة القبة السماوية بمجراتها ومجموعاتها النجمية المتلالئة في الظلام الدامس، فالمعلومات التي تردنا عبر هذا الكون الفسيح، تنتقل بسرعة الضوء حتى تصل إلينا، وكلما زادت المسافات، كلما استغرق الضوء وقتاً أطول لعبورها. .
ليست لدينا أي مشكلة بما يجري أمام أعيننا فوق سطح الأرض أو حول غلافها الغازي، لأن المسافات التي ينطوي عليها الدوران حول الأرض ليست كبيرة جداً. فالمسافة من سطح الأرض إلى محطة الفضاء الدولية تساوي (408000 متراً)، وبالتالي فإن الضوء الذي يأتينا منها ينتقل بسرعة 299.792.458 متراً كل ثانية، وسيقضي حوالي جزء من الألف من الثانية (0.0013 ثانية) في العبور. لذلك يمكن اعتبار الأحداث على محطة الفضاء الدولية وقتاً حقيقياً إلى حد كبير، على الرغم من وجود تأخر في الاتصالات يمكن احتسابه. أما إذا ذهبنا إلى أبعد من ذلك في نظامنا الشمسي، فأن الضوء يستغرق حوالي 1.25 ثانية للوصول إلى القمر (أي ثانيتين ونصف الثانية ذهاباً وإياباً)، أو 8 دقائق و 17 ثانية للوصول من الشمس إلى الأرض. ويحتاج إلى خمس ساعات و 40 دقيقة لينتقل من الشمس إلى كوكب بلوتو، وكلما بعدت المسافات يصبح الفارق الزمني أكبر. .
وعندما نحاول النظر إلى ما وراء نظامنا الشمسي، وإلى مجرة درب التبانة ككل، أو النظر إلى المجرات الأخرى، فإن الفارق الزمني يتعاظم ويصبح أكبر وأكبر، فعندما نلتقط الآن صورة تلسكوبية لجرم سماوي يسبح في مركز مجرتنا، فأن الصورة الملتقطة يعود تاريخها إلى أكثر من 26 ألف عام. وبالتالي فأن الصورة التي تأتينا من هناك فإنما تأتينا من الماضي البعيد، أي انها وقعت قبل 26 ألف سنة. وهكذا تتضاعف السنوات كلما توغلنا بعيداً في أعماق الكون، فالضوء الذي يأتينا من مجرة أندروميدا Andromeda Galaxy يستغرق 2.5 مليون سنة. وبالتالي فاننا عندما ننظر الآن إلى تلك المجرة البعيدة فاننا ننظر إلى ماضيها الذي سبقنا بنحو 2.5 مليون سنة، وإن أي تغيرات تحدث بداخلها سيتم إبلاغنا بها بعد ملايين أو مليارات السنين. اما بالنسبة للمجرات التي تبعد عن مجرة أندروميدا بنحو 200 مرة فإن اللقطات المصورة التي تصلنا منها الآن كانت قد وقعت قبل 200 مرة من السنوات التي مر ذكرها قبل قليل. .
ختاما يمكننا القول وبكل ثقة اننا عندما ننظر إلى المجرات البعيدة المزينة بالمصابيح السماوية والكواكب الجميلة فإنما ننظر إلى ماضيها الذي سبق وجودنا بالآف السنين، وما التلسكوبات والمراصد إلا نوافذ نطل منها على المكونات القديمة لهذا الكون الفسيح. . وصدق رب العزة في محكم كتابه: ((إن في خلق السماوات والأرض واختلاف الليل والنهار لآيات لأولي الألباب)). .
