لقد قدم لنا علماء الفيزياء وعلماء التاريخ فكرتان مربكتان عن الأخطاء التي رافقت احتساب التقويم الميلادي. وعن كيفية احتساب تاريخ الزمن. فقد نشر العالم ستيفن هوكينغ عام 1988 كتابه الموسوم: (تاريخ موجز للزمن) أو (A brief history of time)، حاول فيه شرح مفهوم الزمن، وتبسيط المفاهيم الفيزيائية عن نشأة الكون وتطوره، مرورا بالنظريات العلمية الأكثر تعقيداً حول هذا تاريخ الكون. .
والحقيقة ان المؤلف يتحدث في معظم فصول كتابه عن الجاذبية باعتبارها من العوامل المؤثرة على الزمن. لكنه لم يتطرق للزمن إلا في المقدمة التي حشر فيها الحديث عن الزمن حشراً لتتوافق مع هذا العنوان التجاري, والذي وُفّق في اختياره كعنوان جذّاب. .
ثم جاءنا المؤرخ الألماني هيربرت إليغ عام 1991 بفرضية الزمن الشبحي، أو الزمن الوهمي (Phantom Time hypothesis)، وهي فرضية مستوحاة من نظرية المؤامرة. يزعم فيها أن فترات التاريخ، وتحديداً العصور الوسطى المبكرة (614-911 م)، إما أنها مؤرخة بشكل خاطئ، أو انها لم تحدث على الإطلاق. يؤيده المؤرخ أولريش نيميتز في هذه المزاعم حول التلاعب بنحو 297 عاما لم تكن موجودة. وبالتالي فان عامنا الحالي ليس عام 2023 وإنما عام 1726، وإن السنوات الوهمية أضيفت إما عن طريق الصدفة، أو بسبب سوء التفسير، أو ربما عن طريق الخطأ. أو بالتزوير المتعمد من قبل متآمرين. .
لا شك ان أصحاب هذه الفرضية ليسوا اغبياء، فلديهم حججهم المبنية على الاسس المنطقية. وبخاصة في التباين والتناقض الملموس في العلاقة بين التقويم اليولياني، والتقويم الغريغوري، والسنة الفلكية الشمسية أو الاستوائية. لقد تسببت التقاويم المختلفة في الارتباك الذي شهدته العصور الوسطى. من هنا يزعم هيريبرت إليغ: أن التقويم اليولياني القديم كان ينبغي أن ينتج عنه تناقض لمدة ثلاثة عشر يوما بينه وبين التقويم الحقيقي (أو الاستوائي). إلا أن الفلكيين العاملين لدى البابا لاحظوا أن الفارق كان عشرة أيام فقط. وبما أن كل قرن يأتي بفارق يوم واحد، فإن الأيام المفقودة تبلغ حوالي 3 قرون. .
