من أقدم الفنادق العصرية في بغداد آنذاك .. فندق تيگرس پالاس TIGIRIS PALACE HOTEL أو قصر دجلة الذي تم إنشاؤه في بداية الثلاثينيات. و يحتوي على زخارف وتماثيل وزهور وسلالم مزدوجة. كما كان لكل غرفة شرفة تطل على نهر دجلة. وفيه قاعات للطعام والاجتماعات وكافتيريا بأثاث جميل. في عام 1932 قام الفيلسوف والشاعر الهندي طاغور بزيارة إلى العراق. وكان طاغور أول شخصية حائزة على جائزة نوبل في الآداب (1913) يزور العراق. وقد تم اختيار فندق تيگرس پالاس لاقامة طاغور وزوجته والوفد المرافق له، حيث قضى عشرة أيام. وأقام نادي المعلمين حفلة عشاء لطاغور في إحدى قاعات الفندق بدعوة من وزير المعارف عبد الحسين الجلبي. وفي فندق تيگرس بالاس أقامت الكاتبة الإنكليزية أجاثا كريستي. وتوجد صورة لها في شرفة غرفتها بالفندق وهي تتناول الشاي. وخلال اقامتها في بغداد كتبت قصتها (لقاء في بغداد) أو They came to Baghdad . وقد نشرت لأول مرة في 5 آذار 1951. وتتناول القصة اختيار بغداد لعقد اجتماع سري يضم قادة الدول العظمى بعد الحرب العالمية الثانية، غير أن هذه المعلومة تسربت فوصلت إلى منظمة سرية تسعى إلى إفشال هذه القمة. تصف كريستي أجواء الشارع البغدادي آنذاك وتصرفات الباعة وصياح المشاة (بالك، بالك) وكتبتها بالانكليزية. كما تصف الحيوانات المستخدمة المختلط بضجيج السيارات ومنبهاتها.
