أفادت صحيفة ميرور أن ما يصل إلى 75 جندي وضابط من القوات الخاصة البريطانية الحاليين والسابقين يعانون من إصابات دماغية من القتال في العراق وأفغانستان، وأكدت أنه تم تخفيض رتبة أعضاء الخدمة الجوية الخاصة البحرية الخاصة المصابين، وأجبروا على ترك وظائفهم بسبب حالتهم.
وكانت الصحيفة كشفت الأسبوع الماضي أن الآلاف من الجنود البريطانيين يعانون من إصابات دماغية ورضات بعد تعرضهم لإصابات جراء الانفجارات، لكن بعضهم يتجنب طلب المساعدة الطبية خوفًا من فقدان مناصبهم.
قال أحد الضباط للصحيفة: “إذا طلبت المساعدة بسبب إصابتك في الدماغ، يمكن أن تفقد وظيفتك، أو تتعرض لتخفيض في الراتب”.
وأشارت الصحيفة إلى أن العديد من مرضى إصابات الدماغ الرضية يصبحون أكثر ميلا إلى الانتحار بعد نقص العلاج المناسب، مضيفة أنه في الأسابيع القليلة الماضية، انتحر العديد من قدامى المحاربين في سلاح الجو الملكي.
فقد عُثر على الرقيب السابق ليزا برايدون، 42 عامًا، التي كافحت اضطراب ما بعد الصدمة والاكتئاب والتكيف مع الحياة المدنية، ميتة في سيارتها في يونيو الماضي، وفي الشهر نفسه ، أطلق الرقيب جيمي فيرجسون، 36 عامًا، النار على نفسه بعد أن ترك مقطع فيديو يقول إنه طلب المساعدة ولكن لم يستمع إليه أحد.
كما توفي الرقيب السابق ديفيد بنمان، 56 عامًا، الذي أصيب برضة في الدماغ جراء إصابة في كوسوفو، بعد معاناته من مشاكل الصحة العقلية والادمان على الكحول.
من جانبها، أعلنت وزارة الدفاع البريطانية أن 700 جندي فقط أصيبوا في الدماغ خلال ما يقرب من 20 عامًا من القتال، لكن القادة العسكريين الأميركيين يعتقدون أن ما يصل إلى 20 في المائة من الجنود الذين خدموا في العراق وأفغانستان يمكن أن يكونوا قد أصيبوا في الدماغ، مما يعني أن 300 ألف جندي يمكن أن يكونوا مصابين بهذه الحالة.
وعلى عكس المملكة المتحدة، تقوم أميركا بفحص قواتها بحثًا عن إصابات الدماغ قبل وبعد القتال، فإذا تم تشخيصهم بالحالة، فإنهم يتلقون فحوصات الدماغ والعلاج الهرموني.
ونقلت الصحيفة عن مصدر في فرق القناصة التابعة للقوات الخاصة البريطانية (ساس)، خدم في العراق وأفغانستان ونزاعات أخرى، قوله: “وقعت العديد من التفجيرات قرب الجنود ومن المحتمل انهم تعرضوا لإصابات في الدماغ وقد أخبرني الكثير منهم أنهم قلقون”.
وتابع “لدينا جميعًا اتصالات في القوات الخاصة الأميركية ونعلم جميعًا مدى جدية التعامل مع إصابات الدماغ الرضية في الجيش الأميركي، ويجب على بريطانيا تبني هذا النموذج”.
بدوره، قال متحدث باسم وزارة الدفاع إن صحة ورفاهية القوات كانت أولوية، وأضاف: “لدينا برنامج علاج مخصص لمرض إصابات الدماغ ونقوم بإجراء أبحاث في تشخيص وإدارة وإعادة تأهيل المرضى المصابين بهذه الحالة”.
