على مر العصور تتناقل الأجيال المآثر والتضحيات الجسام لسيد الشهداء الحسين عليه السلام ولآل بيته الأطهار وصحبه الأخيار، فكان الوصف المتوارث لشخصية الإمام أبا عبد الله عليه السلام حسب الروايات شاخصا يداعب مشاعر وأحاسيس الناس من خلال ما أبدعته أنامل الرسامين.

فقال له الإمام (عليه السلام): صدق جدي رسول اللّه (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم).. فقال له الشمر:
وما قال جدك رسول اللّه (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ؟..
قال: سمعته يقول لأبي (عليه السلام):
يا علي يقتل ولدك هذا، أبرص أعور، له بوز كبوز الكلب، وشعر كشعر الخنزير.
فقال له شمر: يشبّهني جدك رسول اللّه بالكلاب، والله لأذبحنّك من القفا، جزاء لما شبّهني جدك.
ثم أكبّه على وجهه، وجعل يحزّ أوداجه بالسيف، وهو يقول:
أقتلك اليوم ونفسي تعلم * * * علما يقينا ليس فيه مزعم
أن أباك خير من يكلّم * * * بعد النبي المصطفى المعظّم
أقتلك اليوم وسوف أندم * * * وإن مثواي غدا جهنّم
وقال الراوي: وكلما قطع منه عضوا نادى الحسين (عليه السلام):
وا محمداه وا علياه وا حسناه وا جعفراه وا حمزتاه وا عقيلاه واعباساه وا قتيلاه وا قلة ناصراه وا غربتاه……..
فاحتزّ الشمر رأسه الشريف، وعلاه على قناة طويلة.. فكبّر العسكر ثلاث تكبيرات.
