شاهدت قبل بضعة أيام مقطعاً مصوراً لكابتن طيّار متخصص بالملاحة الجوية، يسألونه قبل الإقلاع بطائرته: هل الأرض كروية أم مسطحة ؟. فيجيبهم بابتسامة عريضة دلالة على الثقة الزائفة: لا والله. انها مسطحة ونحن نطير بخطوط مستقيمة ليس فيها انحناءات ولا تحدبات ولا انحرافات. .
لا شك ان هذا الطيّار اما ان يكون جاهلاً بعمله، أو انه يعمل في حدود المسافات القصيرة، أو انه لم يسمع باصطلاح الخطوط الحلزونية Rhumb Lines، أو باصطلاح (Loxodromes). .
فعلى الرغم من الكيفية التي تبدو بها خطوط الاتجاه كما لو كانت أقصر مسافة في إسقاطات خرائط معينة، فإنها ليست كذلك عند السفر لمسافات طويلة على كرة مثل الأرض. هذا لأن أقصر مسافة هي تلك الخاصة بدائرة كبيرة. .
الآن، وبعد أن أصبح لدينا تعريف لخط إتجاه واحد، دعنا نطرح هذا السؤال: هل الخط المستقيم دائماً أقصر مسافة بين نقطتين في الملاحة الجوية أو البحرية ؟.
الجواب: كلا، فالخط المستقيم ليس دائماً هو أقصر مسافة بين نقطتين، فتحديد أقصر مسافة بين نقطتين يعتمد على هندسة الجسم المعني، فإذا كان مسطحاً سيكون الخط المستقيم هو الأقصر بين نقطتين، أما على الأسطح الكروية كالأرض فالحسابات تختلف، حيث تمثل مسافة الدائرة الكبرى المسافة الأقصر بين نقطتين. .
فلو فرضنا أننا نعيش على أرض مسطحة، فسيكون الخط المستقيم بالفعل هو أقصر مسافة بين نقطتين. لكن الأرض في الحقيقة كروية الشكل، وان أقصر مسافة بين نقطتين على السطح الكروي هي قوس يعرف باسم (مسافة الدائرة العظمى). وهذا المصطلح ليس بجديد، ولا ادري كيف لم يسمع به هذا الطيّار المبتسم ؟. وكيف لا يعلم أن الطائرات لا تتبع مسارات مستقيمة، وإنما تتخذ مسارات منحنية للوصول إلى وجهتها. وذلك ليس لزيادة التكلفة على الركاب، بل لأنها فعلاً أقصر مسافة بين أي موقعين فوق سطح الأرض. .
لا شك ان الخط المستقيم يبدو على الخارطة المسطحة ثنائي الأبعاد (له طول وله عرض)، ويكون أقصر مسافة بين نقطتين، لكنك لن تجد خارطة دقيقة إذا كانت ثنائية الأبعاد على شاكلة الخرائط التي درستها في المدرسه، أو التي تراها على خرائط جوجل. ولما كانت أرضنا ثلاثية الأبعاد، فإن خير ما يمثلها هو النموذج الكروي. لأن تسطيح الشكل الكروي على الورق، وتحويله إلى شكل مستطيل يتسبب بتشوهات كبيرة في الخارطة المنبسطة. حاول ان تنزع قشرة ثمرة البرتقال وتفرشها على الطاولة، ستجد انها تتمزق، ويصعب عليك تحويل سطحها المتكوّر إلى سطح منبسط. .
فالطائرات تسلك الطريق الاقصر، وهو الطريق الذي يتناغم مع تحدب الأرض، وأحياناً تنحرف مساراتها بزوايا تفرضها ظروف الطقس والتيارات الهوائية. ولو سألت أي ملاح يفهم ألف باء الملاحة الجوية أو الملاحة البحري عن حركة الطائرات والسفن في المسافات البعيدة لقال لك انها تحاكي في سيرها كروية الأرض، فتمشي بخطوط حلزونية لأنها الأقصر والأدق. .
